MultiSense: Automated quality control for flakes, coffee, pellets, and more

SCHULE Mühlenbau has expanded its portfolio with MultiSense, a process measurement instrument developed specifically for in-line measurement during production. The instrument consists of a robust stainless steel measurement channel and a separate evaluation unit with a touch panel. Built-in sensors continuously measure bulk density, moisture content, temperature, and, depending on the model, product weight. Measurements are carried out entirely in-line, eliminating the need to sample or prepare the product. The values are displayed in real time, saved automatically, and presented clearly as trend graphs. MultiSense provides more than just snapshot results; it also creates an ongoing database that enables precise monitoring and control of the entire process.

Technically, MultiSense can be flexibly integrated. The unit has an interface that allows it to be integrated into a PLC-based plant control system. Depending on the local conditions, it can be installed on the floor, on the ceiling or directly within the pipework. Its height of around one meter allows for space-saving installation. With a throughput capacity of 2 to 30 m³ per hour, MultiSense is highly versatile.

Continuous quality control in practice

The flaking line at Bauck is an example of just how effective this kind of process monitoring can be. In the flaking process, product quality largely depends on the correct flaking roller gap. Until now, Roscher Mühle, a subsidiary of Bauck GmbH, has set this gap using a motor, but without automatic control. The operator performed control measurements of the bulk density downstream of the fluidized bed drier at least once per hour. The moisture values were checked separately in the laboratory. As a result, deviations could often only be identified and corrected after a delay. “With MultiSense, we can now automatically control all relevant parameters in the flaking line according to the recipe for the first time,” explains Alexander Bachur, plant manager at Roscher Mühle. “The flaking roller gap automatically adjusts to the preset bulk density. If there are deviations from the recipe, the system automatically makes adjustments. An alarm is triggered only if a limit value specified in the recipe is exceeded. This ensures a stable bulk density and consistent end-product quality.” MultiSense also continuously monitors and automatically records all relevant process parameters. This significantly reduces the need for manual control, stabilizes processes, and eases the workload of operating staff, which positively impacts on operating costs.

The MultiSense is a versatile device that can be used for flaking and for production lines that handle cereals, coffee, pellets, and other bulk materials, where moisture content, bulk density, and temperature are key quality factors. The in‑line measuring device offers significant added value wherever consistent product quality and reliable process control are required.

The new MultiSense process measurement device will be presented for the first time at the IAOM conference in Ohio (USA) from April 14 to 16 and subsequently at the interpack trade show in Düsseldorf (Germany) in Hall 3, Stand 3E91 from May 7 to 13, 2026.
